SERVICE

Service is not ever
what you think it’s supposed to be.
It doesn’t punch a time clock
or fit schedules handily.
If you’re ready for surprises
and annoyances and change,
When you welcome inconvenience
and you do not count it strange
When your minutes and your moments
though employed most gainfully
can be rearranged and given
freely given, graciously;
When your strength or utter weariness
are marshaled for the task.
When your eye discerns a pressing need
and no one has to ask;
When the soul has found its Master
and His life, the life controls
Then service finds a fertile soil
with love its means and goal.
It’s not neat or clean or tidy
It is not a hero’s part
But service, it is loving
Daily loving from the heart.
