Yesterday my almost 16-year-old daughter was complaining about her arm hurting along the bone; and it was bothering her. She described the pain as radiating from the elbow area and it sounded to me like a common complaint among younger children called “nursemaid’s elbow” and refers to a displacement of the bones in the lower arm – a slight dislocation. It can usually be righted relatively easy by a rotation and manipulation of the joints.
Well, we tried a couple of simple motions and movements of her arm without any success and my daughter requested that we cease and desist. We did.
So we passed a very busy day and evening with our family going different directions. But later in the evening as we were getting ready to go to bed, my daughter was walking down the hallway to her bedroom and popped her head into my bedroom and said, “Mom, I need to tell you something.”
“Tonight at orchestra practice,” she began. “My elbow and arm were still hurting and I was thinking it’s really going to hurt when I play my violin. Then guess what happened. I was walking along the back of the room between the rows of chairs; I misjudged my footing and whacked my arm right into a chair. Pretty hard!”
“And guess what? Afterwards it was fine. It’s like the fall pushed the joint back into placed!”
COOL…thank you, Dr. Chair!
