On the calendar that hangs on our kitchen wall, June 21st is designated as the first day of summer. And astronomically, June 21st is the first day of summer; it is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. (That is, it is the day with the longest duration of daylight.) But in our home – yesterday, June 3rd – was the first day of Summer.

My girls finished their school year last Friday, May 31st. So yesterday, Monday, June 3rd, was the first day of summer for us. What did we do? A better question to pose is, “What didn’t we do?” We didn’t get up on time, we didn’t rush to stay on schedule, we didn’t work through our school assignments. And after a delightful indulgence in “didn’t dos”, we used our leisure in wonderful and pleasureable pursuits.

MG decided to prepare her breakfast, take it to her bedroom and leisurely apply herself to a sword study. (This is a rather thorough Bible study produced by Biblebee.org.) PX requested an extended time on the computer to play reading and spelling games at Reading Eggs.com. And I – I stood outside in a lovely state of relax, watering our front yard and planter areas. Ah…Summer!

What else was our day filled with? Many things…but none of them were rushed. There was a quick trip to the post office, violin practice, a little computer business, a trip to the dollar store, lunch, and some pleasure shopping (which netted us some books, CD’s, a couple of solar-powered rock lights and a light that hooks over the ear like a blue tooth – for nighttime reading.) We rented a couple of movies for the evening, rested, did dishes, made soup for dinner and closed out our day in the blissful knowledge that we would not be getting up in the morning to do lessons!
