A few photos of a monarch butterfuly emerging from its chrysalis.

This was a delightful morning occupation both yesterday and today: watching the monarchs emerge from their chrysalises. We “fit it in” somewhere between making and eating breakfast then running out the door to get to classes. Actually, the monarchs were the main attraction, and we “fit in” making and eating breakfast. We watched a total of seven monarchs emerge – 5 yesterday and 2 more today. Today we found out how to tell the difference between male and female monarchs; the two that emerged today were both male. The males have a small black bump on each hind wing along one of the black veins; these bumps are actually scent glands used to attract females.
