“This is weird,” I thought. “I’m the only one at home.”
“Very strange…why did the piano play just now all by itself?”
My husband had just dropped me off in front of our apartment. We had had a very busy morning; for me, it was exhausting! He was off on some more business, and I was coming home to rest.
Upon arriving home, I stood outside chatting with our nearest neighbor; our front doors were mere inches apart and our two apartments had a shared wall; so she truly was a “near” neighbor. After visiting shortly, we said “good-bye” and I went inside.
I shut the door and took a deep sighing breath – alone! Our active morning had left me quite drained of energy; I needed to recharge. I reveled in the quiet emptiness of our apartment as I made myself a bit of lunch and planned on a nice rest on the couch afterwards.
Our apartment was a very pleasant split-level townhouse style dwelling. The front door opened right into a small livingroom and faced a flight of stairs leading up to the bedrooms. Past the livingroom was a small kitchen and dining area with a sliding glass door opening onto a small back patio/garden. It was pleasant; and today it was very quiet.
After lunch I ensconced myself upon the couch with two throw pillows under my head and a good book in my hand. This was just what I needed; I was content.
Now, have you ever thought you saw something out of the corner of your eye…and it was nothing? A flicker? A shadow? A movement?…then when you turned to investigate – nothing. Well, as I read, I thought I saw…something. I glanced around – nothing. It happened once; it happened twice; it happened a third time. But each time I glanced around…always nothing. I figured it was the corner of my glasses catching the light and distracting me. So I kept on reading.
I was facing our livingroom window. And behind me – that is, behind and above my reclining head – out of my line of vision, was our piano. As I was resting and reading, alone in our home, from behind my head I hear the piano play one note, “do———.”
“This is weird,” I thought.
I didn’t look around at first. I just lay there thinking – what could it be? It wasn’t the kind of sound made by some item falling down upon the keys and striking them. And it wasn’t several keys sounding, but one note played. It was not a short and accidental note, but clearly played and seemingly without cause.
Well, I finally turned around to see what caused the mysterious note. Do you know what I saw? Nothing! The piano was there, the piano bench was there, but there was nothing to show how it had played by itself – nothing at all. Then…then I glanced over at the stairs…a furtive black and orange cat was going up the stairs…I don’t have a black and orange cat, but the mystery was solved – Sadie.
Sadie was my next door neighbor’s cat…she must have slunk in while we chatted together earlier. I don’t know where she hid herself before her musical curiosity exposed her presence; she didn’t mew, she didn’t rustle, she just played one note.
