Yesterday, about 15 hours after attaching themselves to their silk pads, our monarch caterpillars (five of them) pupated into lovely light green chrysalises. The very curious thing was that the caterpillars pupated in unison. There were two distinct sets (first 3, then 45 minutes later, 2 more). But each set went through the change from caterpillar to chrysalis during the exact same moments in time. It was totally facinating.

Three chrysalises: transformation complete.

Now we wait for two weeks in anticipation of a truly amazing transformation! Totally new creatures will emerge from these protective capsules. We observed what came before: fat striped caterpillars. Those are gone. Now we observe these lovely green pods hanging from the branch. But there is no clue what will come next. There is something wonderful happening, but there is no observable indication of what it is. Unapparent. Hidden. What will happen next? Stay posted!
